The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) is a flexible, advanced science instrument installed on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) during the 1997 servicing mission. The thirteen spectroscopic and four imaging modes of STIS cover a wavelength range from 115 to 1000 nm. This wavelength range is divided into four spectral bands: Band 1 (115-170 nm); Band 2 (165-310 nm); Band 3 (305-555 nm); and Band 4 (550-1000 nm). The bands are designed for overlap to provide redundancy across three detectors, with Band 2 back-up modes providing full coverage of the Band 1 spectral modes and Band 3/4 back-up modes providing coverage of the low and medium resolution Band 2 modes. The STIS detectors are all two-dimensional in format, with a 1K x 1K pixel Charge-Coupled Device (CCD) covering Bands 3 and 4 and two solar blind, 1K x 1K pixel (2K x 2K in high resolution mode), multi-anode, microchannel array (MAMA) detectors covering Bands 1 and 2.
